Unhappy

My dad has a history of high blood pressure. His dad died at a very young age of a heart attack. Well, my dad said he was at work today and all the sudden felt like he was having a heart attack... he said he felt pressure in his chest, and then got scared and said his heart started racing... Being an RN I see this on a daily basis... but I worry.. he stopped taking his Atenolol the other day because he "ran out" I checked his bp and it is elevated at like 168/92... he has the chills off and on, but he also has a cough... he said his chest pain went away within a few minutes and has not had any since... his Heart rate is regular and steady.... no signs of dizziness, nausea, sweating, going down arm, etc.... he is stubborn and probably wouldnt say if there was something happeneing however, he hates doctors and will avoid them at any cost. I am concerned and dont know what else to do other than monitor him and encourage him to go in if he develops more symptoms... Sigh... why do parents have to be so stubborn?

Oh...we're in the same boat. Between DD and I..we are constantly debating with my mother over her health. And she does things that are dangerous for someone her age. It's so frustrating. I think it's just hard for them to have their kids telling them what to do. And I don't want to harm our relationship, so it's really a catch 22.

Several years ago, my mom had a second heart attack. She knew early in the morning that she was having a heart attack, but she didn't want to bother anyone. She and my dad were staying with my brother and sister in law. They were having a special thing at their church that day, so she just kept silent about what she knew was going on. Her arms were aching so badly that she had to put them in the pockets of her blazer. Now...my dad had at least 5 heart attacks at that point, and my mom had one, so she knew what was happening.

That evening, she and my dad headed for home, which was a 3-hour drive. They were just leaving the city when she told my dad what was going on, and that she couldn't take it anymore. He raced through town...a city he didn't know, and found a hospital. He jumped from the car and ran into the ER shouting, " My wife is having a heart attack!"

I think your dad sounds more sensible about this than my mom! Just keep an eye on him, and know that you are not alone.

To top this perfect day off, my boyfriend got fired from him job today! We had these big plans to move out and get our own house, etc... there are not a lot of jobs in the city here for what he went to school for and what he got fired for was completely dumb! He was logged into a computer at work and left the desk and some lady he works with used it to look up confidential info on her husband! Sigh, right before christmas first of all, and second we are 27-28 years old and still at home! So much for a future with kids and a house with a white picked fence... looks like thats out of my reach at this point

AWWW! I hope your dad does not get worse or have the same thing happen again. I'm so sorry your BF lost his job! That's unfair.

I am very sorry to hear about your bad day today. When things like that happen to me I just rememeber that all things happen for a reason, sometimes the reason does not come to us until later on in our life. Your boyfriend WILL find another job, and the both of you WILL have kids together and get your dream house. Don't let your dreams be distroyed by one bad day, when there are many other days ahead that promise hope

My prayers to to and for your father. BTW...men are like that. They do not like to go to the doctor.

We are colleagues as I am an RN also.
Please try to talk to your dad about seeing an MD. He should at least have an EKG and cardiac enzymes done. It most possibly isn't anything, but knowing his family history he should have something on file in order to have a "baseline". Maybe suggest to him to go back to his MD in order to adjust his medication dosage and once you get him there, spill all to the doctor! Men are really bad about going, it's usually the women in their lives that getthem there.

I hope all is well.

Sorry you've had such a bad day. I do hope your dad will be okay, and that something good will come to your boyfriend quickly, too.

I'm glad that you can vent here.
